One of my favorite parts of photography is building relationships and seeing families grow over the years. Last year, Rachael and Rob traveled from out of state and we documented their pre-baby joy and Rachael's perfect baby bump with a maternity session. Since they don't live in Ohio, I was honored to photograph their maternity pictures, but didn't expect the opportunity to see them again in the Youngstown area for future photo sessions. I know the challenges of traveling with kids, so planning a family photo session away from home would require some extra effort! I have had the joy of knowing Rachael's sister the last few years as her wedding and family photographer, so I was happy to hear updates about Rachael and Rob's family after their baby girl was born. Almost a year after meeting Rachael and Rob in Girard for their maternity session, I was thrilled when Rachael reached out to us to schedule a family session just in time for their baby's 1st birthday! One of the biggest perks of living in Ohio is enjoying the changing seasons, especially the beautiful colors of autumn, so we planned their family session to include lots of fall leaves and trees at scenic Lake Glacier in Mill Creek Park.
Not only did I get to meet their baby girl for the first time, but I also got to meet her charming big brothers, too!
Is it just me, or do kids seem cooler these days? When I was about this age in the 90s, boys had bowl cuts, spiky hair, mullets, and sometimes even the long "tail" in the back. Maybe it's the modern age of the internet and access to better fashion advice, but these kids have great haircuts and are more stylish than I ever was! I'm sure Rachael also deserves some of that credit for keeping her kids fashionable!
I don't focus on strict "what to wear" or "what not to wear" for family photos, but this is a great example of what to wear for your next photo session. You don't need to avoid prints and patterns, and you do not need to have your family all wear the same color. I would recommend coordinating outfits instead of completely matching outfits in almost every situation. The plaid in the boys' flannel shirts adds some interest, and the solid colors that the rest of the family are wearing balance it out. Planning a few coordinating colors works out great, especially when tied together by a simple patterned item of clothing or accessories that include some of those colors. This family did a beautiful job of mixing and matching reds, whites, and blues for a put-together look that still looks natural.
I have a feeling that this little princess enjoys plenty of love and attention from her big brothers!
The kids enjoyed some playtime by the lake while their parents had a few quiet moments together.
During the maternity session last year, Rachael brought along the tiniest pink Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shoes that matched her own. Now, their baby's feet fit perfectly into those little pink shoes, so we had to get some mommy-daughter photos wearing their matching shoes!
Check out her cute little shirt! "I got it from my mama" sums it up perfectly! Beautiful baby and beautiful mama!
It was a joy meeting the kids and seeing this family blossom and grow! Happy 1st birthday sweet girl!
